Child support in California

In the state of California, both parents are expected to financially provide for a child, even if the parents are no longer together. The state uses a number of different factors to determine how much each parent is expected to provide, including income and the amount of time the parent gets to be with their child.

What must be included in a child support agreement?

In California, child support agreements can be either court-ordered or mutually agreed upon between parties. In either case, a court must approve the amount. While the state-mandated child support guidelines can bypass a court appearance, parties seeking an agreement that differs from those guidelines must adhere to specific requirements.
