Why 'divorce hotels' are back in the news

A few years back, the idea of a "divorce hotel" made the rounds. Many blogs and news sites talked about this notion that couples could check into a hotel and get a divorce in one weekend. It was a fun -- and goofy -- story that got all the attention it deserved, which is to say "very little." Of course, since then, divorce hotels haven't really gone away. They still are in operation, and there are still people who consider them for their divorce.

Though it may seem convenient and luxurious to go to the spa and swim in a pool between discussions about child custody and alimony, it may not actually be worth it. You still have to pay large amounts of money to stay at a divorce hotel, and there's no guarantee that your divorce will be handled the way you want it to be handled. One weekend? That’s very little time to discuss (and finalize) some very crucial issues inherent to divorce.

Maybe there is something to the divorce hotel. Maybe for couples who are going through an amicable divorce -- and have very few assets or issues that complicate their divorce -- a stay in a divorce hotel is the right option.

But in general, couples who have seen their marriage hit the last snag need to ensure that their split is addressed in an effective and legitimate way. Bringing an experienced family law attorney into the fold to help ensure this outcome is the best way to handle a divorce.
